Spain Park Game Housekeeping

After Game load trucks and depart for HHS - we will send out a REMIND Text message on our way home with our time of arrival.  We estimate getting back to HHS around 12:15 am.

Uniform
Blue Band Polo tucked into khaki shorts.  Short (ankle length) socks, athletic shoes (not converse, sandles, etc).  An athletic shoe primarily of a neutral color is preferred - we've seen some bright red shoes on the field recently and they stick out!!

Dinner Information
Bring money for a fast-food dinner in the food court of the Galleria Mall.

Student Return / Parent pick up information
Please be prompt in picking students up after away games.  We will be sending out a REMIND text message with a time of arrival back at HHS once we depart Spain Park.

Parents:  Please park in parking spots in the parking lot off of Billie Watkins and wait for your student to come to you or get out of your car and meet them.  Parking in the bus loop or on Billie Watkins St. creates a problem for buses getting in as well as a safety issue for students late at night.

If you are not receiving our REMIND text messages, follow these instructions:
Send a text message to the number 81010
In the text message write:
  • For 9th grade parents/students: @2025hh
  • For 10th grade parents/students: @2024hhsb
  • For 11th grade parents/students: @caeg36
  • For 12th grade parents/students:  @bk48fb

Transportation
For away games, students are required to ride the bus to and from the game.  If there is a extenuating circumstance that would necessitate them leaving early for a game or riding home with a parent, please email a director prior to the game.  Students must always check out with a director prior to leaving with a parent.

Students that take the ACT/SAT on a Saturday morning are welcome to check out AFTER halftime of the Friday night game the night before the test.

Incorrect Student Schedules Update
If your band schedule is still incorrect, make sure you have turned in a schedule change form with your counselor and you may need to follow up with them.  The directors will be doing the same - team effort here!

Symphonic Band:
Please remember that your orange syllabus forms are due this week!  If you did not get one due to a scheduling mishap, please be sure your child asks for one on Tuesday.

We will have two student teachers this semester and both will be working with the Symphonic Band students.  As part of their time with us, they will have to video themselves teaching the class.  Your child will be bringing home a special permission form that must be returned so that the intern can submit these as part of their documentation.  If you have any questions regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Connell.

Color Guard:
Tuesday will be the first sectional of the fall season.  This will take place immediately following the regular Tuesday afternoon rehearsal and will last until 7pm.  Please be sure you have enough water to last through both sessions and bring an extra snack or two!

Guard parents, while Ms. Victoria is our Color Guard instructor, please know that Mrs. Connell is the faculty contact for this class.  If you ever have an issue or question regarding anything that happens with the Guard, please email Mrs. Connell rather than trying to contact Ms. Victoria.

Marching Band:
As a reminder, water jugs are also still very much needed for both class and after school practice! Also, please be sure you are bringing appropriate clothing and shoes for class and after school rehearsals.  Jeans are not appropriate for either class or after school, and students should be sure they are bringing either athletic sneakers or their marching shoes for these practices.  Additionally, female students who wear crop tops during class will be asked to change.  If you aren't sure if a shirt qualifies as a crop top, have your child stand at attention or "horns up" and see if the shirt still meets the top of their pants/ shorts.  If not, please ask them to wear a different top.

SHOW SHIRT DEADLINE EXTENDED TO AUGUST 10!

Picture
VOLUNTARY SHIRT ORDER FORM HERE FOR SUPPORTERS/PARENTS/STUDENTS.  YOUR ORDER WILL BE CHARGED TO YOUR CHARMS ACCOUNT - THESE ARE SHOW SHIRTS AND ARE COTTON BLENDS!

This drawing was designed by ace Mello Allie Polzin.  These shirts are $17 and they are for sale to everyone. The sale of this shirt is voluntary.  These are NOT required for marchers.  We will have a standard issue dri-fit shirt that is going to be given to marching students as a part of their band fees.  Please show your support by ordering one of these fantastic shirts.

2021-2022 HHS Band Parent Association Board Updates

The Board will be meeting Tuesday August 10 at 6pm in the Band Room.  With the momentum the Band has from an outstanding Camp, first week of school, and Preview Show last Friday, the Board can really tend to the business of the Band.  As always, that includes Finances.

We have raised approximately 1/2 of the necessary funds to replace our Band Trucks.  This is over and above the fundraising required to operate the Band.  However, now is not the time to rest!  It is VITAL that we have a tremendous showing in our Boston Butt Fundraiser.  We need to sell 500 Butts, which is about 4 per band member.  Please do your part help the Band.

We still have various fundraising endeavors that we have to navigate our way through - including Sheets sales, and Brick sales.  Sheets are a great Christmas gift - we will have information about that in the immediate future.  Bricks are commemorative markers in the HHS Courtyard.  More on that later.

We need your ideas and input!  Please consider serving the band in any capacity for the 2022-2023 School Year.  If you are interested, please contact Ben Boles by text - 256-651-5690  - and let's get you familiar with what the job entails.  We have numerous positions open in the upcoming year, including President.  Fresh ideas are always welcome, and since the issue of major purchases will be handled this year, the job should be easier moving forward.

Thank you for all you do to support our great Band!

Instrument Drop Off/Pick up

The Band Room is open in the morning as soon as they let students into the school for students to drop off your instrument.  Most instruments should be taken the normal route into the band room, but if you have a large instrument you can drop off at the side and have someone let you in the double doors.  New students should talk to your section leader if you have questions

The Band Room is always open after school to take your instruments home to practice.

Marching Band Rehearsals - B Days and After School.

Even though band camp is over, the heat is not!  Our after school rehearsals are during the hottest part of the day.  Students should plan to keep their water jug, sunscreen, appropriate summer clothing, and athletic shoes at school.  They can keep these items in and around their band cubbies in the band room.

We also use B Day classes to go outside and rehearse.  While we may not be outside everyday, we do go outside during classes a good amount during marching season (through October).  We always allow students time to change clothes at the beginning and end of each class for those that need to.  Students are welcome to use the LARGE restrooms in the auditorium lobby as well as the theater changing rooms behind the stage.

We will NOT be outside during B Day this week on Thursday except for possibly percussion to set up after school rehearsal during 4th block.

Incorrect Student Schedules Update
Our counselors have been working hard to fix any incorrect schedules.  Mrs. Waters corrected band classes on senior schedules on Saturday and I sent them out to those students.

Mr. Whitener is going to give me new freshmen schedules (those whose band classes were not correct) on Monday and they will be distributed Monday night at rehearsal.

I have not heard from Mrs. Mosby and Mr. Watson, but i'm confident the incorrect schedules for sophomores and juniors are being worked on.  Everyone will receive another copy of their schedule on the first day of school.

Band Calendar 21-22

We are making final additions/edits to the 2021-22 charms calendar!  The easiest way to access our full year calendar and keep up is by syncing it to your smart phone calendar.  You can also go to charmsoffice.com and enter the school code HuntsvilleHSBand to view.

The Fall after school weekly schedule: (This schedule runs from August through October)

Monday:  Marching Percussion 4-5:30
Tuesday:  All Competition Band 4-5:45.  Color guard stays until 7:00 pm for their weekly sectional.
Wednesday:  Off (no rehearsals except during homecoming week)
Thursday:  All Competition Band 4:00-5:45 pm  (no rehearsal on weeks we have a game on Thursday night).

**In addition each section (except guard and percussion) is required to hold a 20 minute sectional every week.  These are student run and we are encouraging our leadership team to take responsibility for this.  If you student mentions a sectional before or after school one day, this is what they are referring to**
