Things We LikeIt was great to welcome 8th grade band students from Hampton Cove Middle and Huntsville Junior High to Huntsville High. They spent the morning learning about our band program, hearing performances, meeting students, and experiencing what high school band is all about. Congratulations to sophomore percussionist Joey Colavita, who performed last weekend with the 2026 Alabama All-State Gold Jazz Band. Joey was chosen as the drum set player for the top band after a highly competitive audition. UAH Honor Band Friday: Off. UAH Honor Band Saturday: UAH Honor Band Scheduling Changes at Huntsville HS and for Band Teachers were informed earlier this month that both Huntsville HS and Grissom HS are being required to move to traditional block scheduling for the 26-27 school year. According to our principal this is a done deal and there will not be any community input allowed. I have been told it has been announced to the community. Currently Lee, Columbia, and Jemison are on traditional block schedule, while Huntsville and Grissom are on alternating block scheduling because it was better for the students at that school. Traditional block means you will take 4 classes in the Fall every day and the class ends in December. You will take 4 different classes in the spring every day that ends in May. This is a challenging schedule for students doing multiple activities as well as dealing with class conflicts of classes that meet at the same time. Because of the nature of traditional block schedule, some of how the band program will set up will be different. We are working through that now and hopefully will talk to students about it soon. Although all academic classes will only last a semester, band will continue to be a year-round program for ALL band students (concert only students, color guard, marching band, percussion). Students who do concert-only and color guard will need to have 2 blocks available for band (1 class for fall and 1 class for spring). I have already spoken to many athletes in band and we will work with you on this. For marching band members who are already in 2 blocks of band, it will not be that different as far as registering for classes. We will discuss this more soon! I wanted to give everyone a heads up that changes will be coming. Stuart Tankesley Music Performance Assessment (MPA) Students in Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble (all studnents in the band program except color guard) are performing at MPA at James Clemens. MPA takes place on February 24, 25, and 26. We will perform one of these days. We have been asking students since last week for MAJOR EVENT conflicts for these days that we may need to schedule around. Please let us know if there are events we need to try to work around. We can REQUEST dates and times of day (morning/afternoon). We are already aware of the HHS soccer conflicts on Feb 24 and 26. Once again Huntsville High School Band is providing a huge service to our band community by hosting the Alabama Bandmasters Association's District 1 all state and honor band auditions, which will take place after school / evening on Friday, January 30th and morning/afternoon of Saturday, January 31st. We usually have 700-800 middle and high school band students from Madison, Morgan, and Limestone attend over these two days. We are one of the largest districts in Alabama. All band students will be required to serve a shift of time and will sign up in the band room soon. Positions for adults at the registration table have been posted on cuttime! If you are unable to access, you can email [email protected] Pizza will be provided around meal times for those volunteering. Spring Trip (Rooming list - Updates) On Monday, January 12th we will post rooming lists for students in the band room! Please plan ahead for a room of 4 students - make sure everyone in your room is committed to the room then sign up. If 3 people sign up for a room, there is a high probability a 4th person will be added to your room. ADULTS - if you are paying as a single room, you are set. All other adults will be 2 to a room - if adults have a room mate request with another adult chaperone attending please email Tawnita Cheek, our booster club trip coordinator at [email protected] Family members (husband/wife/younger siblings) will automatically be placed together in a family room, so no need to send us that request. We have officially been approved for the Orlando trip departing Wednesday evening March 11th and returning Monday morning, March 16th. Full information on this trip is found in Cut Time in an announcement/email message from August 19th. Make sure you are making your scheduled payment directly to the travel company using the link below. If you miss 2 payments in a row, it is the policy of the travel company to remove your name from the trip. If you are waiting to pay due to fundraising credits, please make sure you let us know [email protected] HUNTSVILLE HS BAND in Orlando, FL, USA Winter Camp 2026 Our annual concert band camp will take place Thursday evening, February 12th; all day on Friday, February 13th; and Saturday morning, February 14th. If you are interested in doing one of these events, they are generally marked as an administrative absence or field trip (excused by the school). I would be happy to do a form or recommendation to get anyone involved if you are interested. I will attempt to post SOME of the events offered in our state and area, but there are many so not everything will get posted on here! It's a great chance to meet new people, experience college music, and see a university you may be interested in attending in the future. The vast majority of events are open to all high school students (grades 9-12).
