Things We LikeMembers of our leadership team visited Blossomwood Elementary School, one of our feeder schools, to help celebrate their PBIS Kickoff! Our students enjoyed performing for the Blossomwood Panthers and sharing their excitement for music. We look forward to seeing these young musicians grow and join the HHS Band family in the years ahead. Fall Break Game UpdateStudents and Parents, I have made the decision for the band to not attend the Fall break game. I know some of you were looking forward to the optional game, so I am sorry we have to cancel. We are still working through Friday. There were football players on the field during our halftime show specifically in areas where our students were performing. They ran into color guard members and cursed at them. There was also an incident between some players and me when I was trying to avoid this from happening on the sideline. There are reports of some football players threatening band members after the game. We feel like a break is needed. Some of you may and should be angry at this, but know we are taking care of it. I am proud of how our students conduct themselves every day. We have the best kids and families. Don’t say or do anything that would put any blame on us. Let us handle this situation. I hope you all have a terrific fall break!!! Thank you for everything you do. HUNTSVILLE HS BAND in Orlando, FL, USA Marching Band Field Trip!!!! Thursday, October 16thWe are teaming up with Hampton Cove Elementary School and providing a great music opportunity for their kindergarten students on Thursday, October 16th. During the morning hours (during school), we are planning to bus to Milton Frank and meet our HCES friends. We are planning to do an interactive instrument and color guard/majorette experience, learning about all the different instruments and marching band. We will play our stand tunes and do our competition halftime show performance before returning to school around lunch time. More information to come! Clarinets and Saxophone - Reed Day on Wednesday, November 5thDr. Melissa Koprowski is a VanDoren performing artist who lives here in town. Although from Alabama, she has taught all over the US including being a clarinet professor at the University of Wisconsin. She "retired" to be a full time mom to her 6 kids. Every few years, she comes and does a special reed presentation during class to our clarinets and saxophones that's really helpful to them. She will have free reeds for them to try and give away as part of the presentation. Unfortunately, she is only available during our B day 1st period band class, but if there is a concert only student who wants to join us, please see Mr. Tankesley and we can ask your teacher for permission to come. Courtyard by Marriott Performance - November 13th Courtyard by Marriott on University Dr is doing a grand re-opening on Thursday, November 13th after school from 4-6. Our leadership team will be performing. Any other marching band students that want to join us are welcome! Courtyard by Marriott is giving us a donation and allowing us some free hotel rooms for our clinicians. Trumpet and Trombone MutesAll trumpet and trombone players in the HHS Band program should own a metal straight mute. These are easy to find at one of the local music stores (Gadsden, Hallman's, Madison Band Supply) or ordered online. Dennis Wick, Jo Ral, Tom Crown, Yamaha, and Bach are all good straight mute companies. College CornerUniversities often offer marching band days, instrument days, and honor bands as a way to give high school students additional opportunities and recruit for their university. If you are interested in doing one of these events, they are generally marked as an administrative absence or field trip (excused by the school). I would be happy to do a form or recommendation to get anyone involved if you are interested. I will attempt to post SOME of the events offered in our state and area, but there are many so not everything will get posted on here! It's a great chance to meet new people, experience college music, and see a university you may be interested in attending in the future. The vast majority of events are open to all high school students (grades 9-12).
